Free & Reduced Pena Palace Tickets

Children under 6, Sintra residents on Sundays and public holidays, youth and seniors, disabled visitors and their companions — Pena has one of the broadest free-entry policies in Portugal. Here's exactly who qualifies, what to bring, and how to book the right ticket type.

Pena Palace has one of the more generous free-entry policies of any major monument in Portugal — children under 6 always enter free, Sintra residents enjoy free entry on Sundays and public holidays, and a broad list of reduced-rate categories applies year-round including youth (6–17), seniors (65+) and disabled visitors with one companion. The eligibility list is broader than most visitors realise. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related information.

Who qualifies

Who enters free

    • Children under 6: Free for the Park + Palace, every day. A free timed-entry ticket is still required. ID with date of birth may be requested at the Robles Gate.
    • Sintra residents on Sundays and public holidays: Free entry to all Parques de Sintra monuments including Pena. Proof of address (Portuguese citizen card with Sintra municipality) required at the gate.
    • Carers and companions: One companion of a disabled visitor enters free of charge — added automatically when you book the disabled-visitor ticket.
    • ICOM, ICOMOS and CIMAM members: Free with a valid professional card.
    • Portuguese unemployment beneficiaries: Free entry with valid documentation from the Portuguese employment institute (IEFP).
    • Teachers leading school groups: Free as part of the group booking (15+ students).

Who gets a discount

The reduced rate — typically 10–15% off the full price — applies to:

    • Youth aged 6 to 17 with valid ID showing age.
    • Seniors aged 65 or older with valid ID.
    • Disabled visitors with a valid disability certificate (Portuguese ATESTADO MÉDICO MULTIUSOS or equivalent EU documentation) — free for disabled with 60%+ verified disability.
    • Family tickets: 2 adults + 2 youth (6–17) at €60 (saves €16 versus individual tickets).
    • Groups of 15 or more.

How to claim a free or reduced ticket

Children under 6: book a free timed-entry ticket online — it's in the same flow as the paying tickets, you just choose the child option. Bring an ID document with date of birth on the day (the child's passport, EU ID card or birth certificate).

Sintra residents: show your Portuguese Citizen Card with a Sintra municipality address at the Robles Gate on Sundays or public holidays. No advance booking is required for this category, but expect queues on summer Sundays.

Youth, seniors and families: book the reduced-rate ticket online, then bring valid ID showing your age or family relationship (passport, EU ID card, citizen card). Without proof on the day, you may be asked to pay the difference at the entrance.

Disabled visitors: book the disabled-visitor ticket; the free companion ticket is added automatically at no extra charge during checkout. Bring a valid Portuguese ATESTADO MÉDICO MULTIUSOS or equivalent EU disability documentation. Disabled visitors with 60%+ verified disability enter free; those with lower verified disability get the reduced rate.

Bring proof: ID with date of birth for children and seniors, valid ID for youth, disability card for disabled visitors, the relevant pass for everyone else. Staff at the Robles Gate check randomly — having proof on you avoids any awkward conversations at the entrance.

Free & Reduced FAQ

Eligibility, documents, and edge cases

Do children under 6 really enter free?
Yes. A free timed-entry ticket is still required — book it in the same order as paying adults. ID with date of birth may be requested at the entrance. Children aged 6 to 17 pay the reduced rate.
Are Sintra residents really free?
Yes — Sintra residents (with Portuguese Citizen Card showing a Sintra municipality address) enter all Parques de Sintra monuments free of charge on Sundays and public holidays. This includes Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, Monserrate and the Convent of the Capuchos.
Do non-Portuguese youth get the reduced rate?
Yes — the youth discount applies to any visitor aged 6 to 17 with valid ID showing date of birth. Portuguese, EU and non-EU youth all qualify, unlike many Western European museums which restrict reduced rates to residents.
Are seniors discounted?
Yes — visitors aged 65 or older qualify for the reduced rate with valid ID showing age. No requirement for Portuguese residency or proof of pension status.
Can carers enter free?
Yes — one companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free of charge. The disabled visitor themselves enters free if the verified disability is 60% or more; otherwise they pay the reduced rate. See our accessibility page for related services.
Is there a family ticket?
Yes — the family ticket covers 2 adults + 2 youth (6–17) for €60 total, saving €16 compared with buying individual tickets. Additional children up to 17 can be added at the youth rate.
What happens if I forget my ID?
Staff may ask you to pay the difference between the full and reduced rate at the entrance, refundable later by email if you provide proof within 30 days.
Are teachers free?
Teachers leading school groups (15+ students) enter free as part of the group booking. Individual teachers do not enter free — they pay the regular adult rate or the reduced rate if 65+. Foreign teachers without ICOM or equivalent need to pay full price.
